About

Shifting Alliances asks a simple but revealing question: what happens to trust when breaking it might pay off? Teams take on a series of fast challenges that test communication, problem solving and strategic thinking.

Every team starts with the same goal. As the game goes on, however, they reach decision points that add uncertainty. At certain moments, individuals or whole teams can choose to act for themselves instead of for the group.

Each choice changes the scores, the progress of other teams and, in the end, the final result. Alliances form, shift and sometimes break.

The result is a gripping experience where collaboration, negotiation and flexibility are essential, and where teams must keep rethinking their strategy and relationships, just as they do at work.

Learning outcomes

Shifting Alliances is designed to build trust, strengthen team dynamics and improve decisions under pressure. By setting cooperation against self-interest, it shows clearly how behavior shapes performance. It is especially useful for leadership and cross-department groups.

Participants become more aware of how trust is built, tested and kept. Many are surprised by how fast it can disappear and how hard it is to win back.

The activity also highlights accountability, alignment and ethical decision-making, especially when time is short and the way forward is unclear. Because every choice shows up in the scores, the link between behavior and results is impossible to miss.

A facilitated reflection then helps teams understand how they work together, how decisions get made and how individual actions affect everyone, lessons that carry straight into leadership and teamwork.
