About

Domino Effect Machine is a large-scale build in which your whole group creates one life-size contraption. Each team designs a device that performs a simple action, and every device must trigger the next one in line.

Making it work once is not enough. Teams test, adjust and test again until their device works every time, and they quickly learn that simple designs are usually the most reliable.

Neighboring teams then work together on the handover between their machines, so the action flows smoothly from one device to the next all the way around the room.

When everything is ready, the first team starts its device. One by one, each creation triggers the next until the cascade reaches a wonderfully simple yet spectacular final action, usually to big applause.

Learning outcomes

Domino Effect Machine works like a real project with real limits. During planning, the design is split into segments and people and materials are divided into working groups, which tests team dynamics and resource management.

Teams rely on problem solving, creativity and communication to plan a device that is ambitious but achievable in the time available. Simple, reliable ideas usually beat complicated ones.

Building and testing need coordination between teams and across different skills and approaches. Most devices need several attempts, so persistence and a positive attitude to failure become part of the lesson.

The activity motivates everyone toward excellence and keeps every person involved. Watching the full cascade run for the first time is a moment of shared triumph that teams remember long after.

Program flow

  1. Master plan

Teams learn how the contraption works and which part of the sequence they own.

  2. Design

Teams plan a device that performs a simple action and connects to the next team.

  3. Build and test

Teams build their device, then test and refine it until it runs reliably.

  4. Perfect the handover

Neighboring teams link their devices and fine-tune every connection.

  5. The big run

The first device is triggered and the cascade runs around the room to its finale.
